Electric Golf Carts Are Driving the Future of Transportation
One of the biggest, if not the biggest, trends amongst vehicle makers over the last several years is the rise of the electric vehicle. Cars, bikes, boats, you name it – virtually every form of transportation is going electric. And golf carts are no exception.
In this blog, we’ll explain the ins and outs of electric golf carts, why they are superior to outdated gas-powered carts, how they meet a growing customer demand, and why Ghost Carts is your best bet for custom electric golf carts.
What is an electric golf cart?
To put it simply, an electric golf cart is a cart that runs on an electric motor. The design of the motor might seem futuristic and complicated, but it’s actually quite simple. It has three main components: the rotor, stator, and commutator. An electric current runs through the stator and rotor, which create their own magnetic fields. The commutator’s job is to change the polarity of the rotor’s magnetic field so that it is constantly repelling the stator’s magnetic field. This repelling force is what powers the motor.
An oversimplified example that might help you picture this is one you’ve likely tried yourself – when you try to put the north poles of two magnets together, they will resist this and create a force that repels them. This is the essence of how an electric motor works.
Electric motors are superior to gas motors in many ways:
- Efficiency: electric motors convert over 85% of electrical energy into motion. Gas motors convert less than 40%, according to a Stanford study.
- Decarbonization: reports indicate that vehicles with electric motors emit about half as much carbon dioxide as a gas-burning vehicle.
- Ease of use: 80% of electric motor charging is done at home, according to the U.S. Department of Labor
Benefits of Electric Golf Carts
Electric golf carts are taking over the golf cart industry, and that trend is only going to continue. There’s a good reason for it – electric golf carts are superior to gas carts in so many ways. Here are some of the best benefits:
- Quiet: much less noisy than their gas counterparts, electric golf carts are perfect for cruising the golf course or around the neighborhood.
- Fast: Electric motors accelerate a lot faster than gas carts, and top speeds are higher.
- Eco-friendly: Electric golf carts leave a much smaller environmental footprint than gas-powered carts.
Meeting Customer Demands
As a whole, the golf cart industry is surging, taking in $283.7 million in revenue in 2024, according to an IBISWorld industry report. Revenue is projected to continue growing over the next several years.
Clearly, golf carts are going to take a major role in the world of transportation, and golf cart customers have specific demands. The most common ask from customers is for electric carts. People are looking for more eco-friendly options in everything they buy. Given the substantial negative impact that gas-powered vehicles have on the planet, an electric vehicle is top priority for consumers.
IBISWorld predicts that golf cart dealers who provide a wide range of comfortable, customizable electric golf carts will reap the most profit. The report also noted that customers are specifically looking for vehicles with solar panels that boost the cart’s eco-friendly appeal.

What Makes a Good Golf Cart? Our Breakdown and Top Picks
Are you looking for a golf cart but not sure where to start? This can be a daunting task, but Ghost Carts is here to help. In this blog, we will explain the three most important factors to consider and share our top golf cart models of the year.
Quality Build
Golf carts and other low-speed vehicles are an investment. Make sure the cart you choose is in it for the long haul. Quality materials and solid construction are paramount.
Materials
The backbone of the golf cart is the frame. Golf cart frames are typically either steel or aluminum alloy, much like standard automobiles. There are pros and cons to both. Steel offers great strength at an accessible price point. Aluminum alloy is stronger, but much more expensive to produce and requires special maintenance.
Ghost Carts typically use steel frames for our builds. The strength and durability combined with powder coating prevents the frame from rusting and adds a nice finish to the underbelly of the cart.
Power
Gas or electric? This is the next important question to ask. How you choose to power your cart will greatly affect your experience. Both have unique pros and cons, but we recommend fully electric golf carts. Here’s why:
It’s smarter.
Historically, gas-powered golf carts have dominated the market due to their ability to pull heavier loads in comparison to primitive 48V lead acid battery systems. Despite the noise and fumes, gas-powered carts were popular because of the ability to take them to small engine repair shops, even though they are more expensive to purchase and maintain. Additionally, new state emissions laws make owning them more difficult.
EV golf carts typically have either lead-acid batteries or lithium systems. Lead-acid batteries are cheaper, but require constant maintenance and refilling of distilled water to power the cores. They are also subject to corrosion and power bleeding.
Lithium-powered systems are efficient, stable, and easy to maintain. At Ghost Carts, we only build 72V lithium-powered systems with LiFePO (lithium iron phosphate) batteries, which can drive motors up to 7.5kW. These carts are quiet, don’t emit fumes and have lots of power. Also, all Ghost Carts come with solar panels to supplement the life of your battery and extend the distance you can travel on a single charge.
Fits Your Lifestyle
Another important thing to consider is how your golf cart will fit into your life. Where will you be driving? How long is your typical journey? What features do you use the most?
If you are just cruising the neighborhood, visiting the grocery store, or playing nine holes, the ruggedness of your cart may not be a determining factor. If you want the capability to travel off the beaten path, then you will want a more aggressive style. We offer both.
Do you prefer a cart that runs quietly? Or do you want the option to blast some music? Take your music with you on your cruise with our all-weather Bluetooth speakers. On top of this, our carts come with touchscreen dashes pre-installed with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto devices.
Reasonable Price
Of course you want top quality, but you don’t want to break the bank either. Unlike major dealers, Ghost Carts does not add extensive markups. We are proud of our innovative golf carts and we want you to experience them without charging you an arm and a leg.
